Tai Foong Lam is a well-known intellectual property (IP) practitioner specialising in information technology (IT) and telecommunications. He is recognised by The Asia Pacific Legal 500 as one of the leading individuals in IT and Telecoms practice. His clients include many of Malaysia’s major telecommunications companies.
Foong Lam has extensive experience in negotiating and drafting commercial agreements relating to intellectual property, telecommunications networks and services, information technology, outsourcing, e-commerce, e-banking, contract manufacturing, technology transfer, research and development, merchandising, franchising, licensing, provision of services, and distribution rights. He also frequently collaborates with corporate lawyers on transactions involving intellectual property.
In addition to his commercial practice, Foong Lam has an active practice in IP litigation and enforcement of IP rights. Several of the IP cases he has handled have been reported in Malaysian legal journals. He is actively involved in the IP community both locally and internationally. Foong Lam has served for many years as a member of the Bar Council Intellectual Property Committee and currently holds the position of President of the Malaysian Chapter of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) — the world’s leading non-governmental organisation dedicated to the research and development of policy and law relating to the protection of intellectual property.
In recent years, Foong Lam has expanded his litigation practice to include insurance-related tort litigation, having successfully handled more than 60 cases.
Foong Lam graduated with an LL.B (Hons) from Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, in 1992, and was called to the Bar of England and Wales (Lincoln’s Inn) in 1993. He was subsequently admitted to the Malaysian Bar in 1995.
